The model for the labyrinth is based on the Ethiopian Cross, and has a layout that reflects the integration of Ethiopian spirituality into the life and worship at Saint Ambrose. The Ethiopian cross has intricate latticework that is intertwined representing everlasting life. It is called wanfit in Amharic and resembles a sieve design. The lobes of the labyrinth integrate that wanfit design and resemble the mandorla: the ancient symbol of resurrection and the basic for the Christian fish symbol. The wanfit and braiding design also influenced Celtic Christianity and Celtic braiding.
