Historic Freedmen’s Town Labyrinth in the shadow of the Downtown Houston Skyline

1407 Valentine
Houston
Texas, 77019
United States

View Map View Map

The Historic Freedmen's Town labyrinth was constructed on the former site of the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church by a group of interfaith volunteers in the spring of 2014. The design chosen for this labyrinth is the eleven circuit Chartres, with the outer circuit diverted at each of the four corners to create a bastion. A mosaic designed bench created by the Sacred Sites Quest students of the Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance has been placed within each bastion to provide a place for pilgrims to sit and meditate. The path is inset with red bricks from the original 100 year old church building which collapsed in 2005.
